In alignment with our mission to empower and restore families, we’ve compiled mental health resources for teens to inform, educate, and inspire our greater community. As a teen treatment program, we’re dedicated to helping young people and families live healthier, happier lives.
LGBTQ+ youth have higher rates of mental health issues in large part due to being mistreated and stigmatized in society, and in their own families. Because of that, it is imperative that safe spaces are created for folks to heal, grow, and feel confident to be fully themselves, not just during Pride Month, but ✨all year round✨.
In 2023, 50% of our teens at Newport identified as LGBTQ+ and we are proud to be a safe zone for queer folks to become the full version of themselves.
🟡This month, our link in bio will have resources on how you can support the LGBTQ youth in your life and be that safe space all year, too!🟡
It’s typical for teens to stress about things like safety, organization, and cleanliness, and because that`s normal to some degree, it can take people up to ‼️ 17 years ‼️ to seek treatment for OCD after symptoms start to show.
However, teens with OCD experience intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors that interfere with their daily life, and it is extremely important for adults & loved ones in their lives to help them find relief instead of continuing to suffer.
If you`re concerned for a teen, head over to the link in our bio and take our OCD assessment today to gain some clarity on what could be going on!

What better month than #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth to start discussing how to effectively communicate with our teens? It`s not always easy and it often feels like they`re not listening when parents talk. However, it`s a huge part of building a good relationship with your child.
More importantly, an ongoing, meaningful connection between kids and parents is one of the most powerful factors in supporting teen mental and physical health. That includes open communication in which teens feel safe talking with parents about what they’re thinking and feeling.
We`ve selected a few tips to share from our mental health experts at Newport, but we`d love to hear from parents and guardians. What is your approach when reaching out to your kid? How do you build meaningful connections in your home?
Getting information out of a teen boy can be difficult, if not impossible. The stereotypes of teen boy communication at this age—monosyllabic answers to every question, a complete lack of eye contact, and the inevitable eye roll when you ask them about their life—are often true. And then there’s the struggle to get them away from their phone, video game, or other device long enough to have a heart-to-heart talk.
We`ve compiled five ways to push through those barriers and learn how to talk to boys about their mental health. What else have you tried that worked in your household? . . #parentingteens #parentingboys #parentingteenboys #teenmentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthsupport #mentalhealthadvocate #traumahealing #parentingsupport #mentalhealthtips #mentalhealth #parentingtips...
Sometimes the right treatment can not only help you walk the healing path, but also help you discover who you were ✨always✨ meant to be!
Today’s story of hope comes from our outpatient treatment center in Waukesha, WI, and is a perfect and beautiful example of that:
“Before Newport, I was in a terrible relationship. I was struggling with drugs, did not speak with my family, was very depressed, and eventually ended up hospitalized at a local facility. Although other treatments made a small short term difference, I would be sent to outpatient, go back to school, and all my problems would continue...it was a cycle. Newport staff went above and beyond to support my needs and make me feel as though they saw me, and not just another teen in treatment. I will never forget when the staff was able to connect me to an art therapist and a current art student at Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design. I was able to openly talk with both and learn more about art, how I can get better, and most importantly, that this goal was something I could eventually attain. I have learned that art is something that can help me through the pain. I put those feelings into my work, and it is something beautiful, even if it isn’t perfect. I am now pursuing a degree in art therapy to help other individuals who have been through similar experiences.” . . #mentalhealthhope #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthsupport #parentingteens #parentingtips #parentingsupport #teenmentalhealth #mentalhealthjourney...
This year, Newport has partnered with @neda (National Eating Disorder Association) as a collaborator for this year`s Eating Disorder Week—Get in the Know!
Eating disorders have the 2nd highest mortality rate of any mental health disorder. Yet, eating disorders only receive about $0.73 of federal research funding per individual diagnosed. For comparison, schizophrenia and Alzheimer`s receive $86–$88 each, per individual diagnosed.
There is no shame in having an eating disorder. Eating disorders are complex medical and mental illnesses that involve genetics, your environment, and social factors. However, healing is possible through treatment. Getting diagnosed and treated in the early stages of an eating disorder greatly improves the chance of recovery.
Knowledge is power! Share information, talk about it, learn the symptoms, and don`t wait to get help if needed. . . #EDAW #EatingDisorderAwareness #EatingDisorderAwarenessWeek #MentalHealthMatters #MentalHealthSupport #MentalHealthAdvocacy #MentalHealthTips #ParentingTeens #ParentingTeenagers #ParentingTips...
This week’s story comes from a previous client who went into our OCD treatment program in Los Angeles, CA. He was full of fears and doubts, but left as the best version of himself. Full story below 👇🏼
“When I walked into Newport, I did not expect to overcome so many fears. My OCD was horrible and my self-esteem was at its lowest. I would obsess every single day without stopping. Thanks to Newport, I was able to increase my self-esteem, decrease my OCD, and understand my family. After only two months, it feels like my whole life has evolved into something new. For anyone scared to start, it will be worth your time. You’ll meet the best people and you’ll become your best self.”
OCD is real and very debilitating, but there’s hope for healing ✨ . . . #ocdtreatment #ocdawareness #ocdsupport #ocdhelp #teenmentalhealth #parentingteens #youngadultmentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthsupport #parentingtips #obsessivecompulsivedisorder...
Social media is constantly telling us what we should look like and promoting toxic and unattainable "standards of beauty." In a 2021 study by City University of London, 94% of participants said they felt under pressure to look a certain way.
However, with Valentine`s Day around the corner, it`s a great time to remind ourselves that everyone is deserving and worthy of love regardless of their size and shape. 💕
Love doesn’t need to come from another person for us to feel accepted—just the opposite. When we feel love for ourselves, we can flourish and build resilience despite the harsh expectations around us.
The journey of self-acceptance can be a long and meandering road for anyone, but especially for someone having mental health challenges. Because of the ongoing negative impact on the body, eating disorders are the deadliest of all mental illnesses. However, long-term healing is possible, and support from parents and loved ones on this journey is essential!
Today, let this be a loving reminder that you are worthy—not because of how you look, but because of who you are and what you contribute to the world. ✨ . . #mentalhealthhope #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthsupport #parentingteens #parentingtips #parentingsupport #teenmentalhealth #mentalhealthjourney #valentinesday #valentinesdayselflove #selflove #selfacceptance...
If recognizing signs of bullying was already hard, parents can have an even harder time with cyberbullying.
With the vast majority of teens spending hours upon hours of time in the online world, teen cyberbullying has become rampant. Social media and other online forums provide ways for teens to bully peers without real-life repercussions.
It’s imperative that parents learn to recognize signs and know what to do, as victims of cyberbullying are four times as likely to engage in suicidal thoughts or attempts.
Tag your friends or share this post to help educate parents on things they can do about bullying, whether their child is the victim or the bully....
We know how hard it can be when your child is going through a tough time.
We share these testimonials as an attempt to restore hope. Hope for a better future, hope for healing and relief.✨
Enjoy the story of hope below from a past client who attended our teen treatment program near Irvine, CA. ♥️
“Sending our 13-year-old daughter to Newport was the hardest but best decision we have ever made. After many attempts in therapy to help her with extreme depression/anxiety, self-harm, emotional dysregulation, and a suicide attempt, we knew she needed something more intensive. At Newport, she was given the opportunity to focus on herself without all the outside distractions and with the help of knowledgeable therapists and extremely caring staff who she adored. My favorite part was the Attachment-Based Family Therapy. My daughter and I are so much closer now. When there are struggles now, we know how to work through them together in a healthy way. I am forever grateful for Newport and the way they were able to help my daughter start to turn things around. We have had a wonderful experience from the intake coordinator all the way through to the alumni follow-ups.” . . #mentalhealthhope #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthsupport #parentingteens #parentingtips #parentingsupport #teenmentalhealth #mentalhealthjourney...
80% of people who set New Year`s goals, for themselves or for their families, end up abandoning them. That`s because they`re usually too big and unrealistic—or they`re not based in authentic values and beliefs.
So this year, we`re proposing something different. Let`s make 2024 the year of acceptance! Let`s focus on the good that we are and do every day. Let`s celebrate what`s working in our lives and lean into that.
You don`t have to achieve a certain number of goals to be whole and to be enough. This year, let`s embrace ourselves, our loved ones, and our relationships just as they are—because making positive change starts with being okay with where we are right now.
On this Giving Tuesday, help teens and young adults in crisis get the support they need, by donating to To Write Love On Her Arms today.
