In alignment with our mission to empower and restore families, we’ve compiled mental health resources for teens to inform, educate, and inspire our greater community. As a teen treatment program, we’re dedicated to helping young people and families live healthier, happier lives.
What better month than #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth to start discussing how to effectively communicate with our teens? It`s not always easy and it often feels like they`re not listening when parents talk. However, it`s a huge part of building a good relationship with your child.
More importantly, an ongoing, meaningful connection between kids and parents is one of the most powerful factors in supporting teen mental and physical health. That includes open communication in which teens feel safe talking with parents about what they’re thinking and feeling.
We`ve selected a few tips to share from our mental health experts at Newport, but we`d love to hear from parents and guardians. What is your approach when reaching out to your kid? How do you build meaningful connections in your home?
Getting information out of a teen boy can be difficult, if not impossible. The stereotypes of teen boy communication at this age—monosyllabic answers to every question, a complete lack of eye contact, and the inevitable eye roll when you ask them about their life—are often true. And then there’s the struggle to get them away from their phone, video game, or other device long enough to have a heart-to-heart talk.
We`ve compiled five ways to push through those barriers and learn how to talk to boys about their mental health. What else have you tried that worked in your household? . . #parentingteens #parentingboys #parentingteenboys #teenmentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthsupport #mentalhealthadvocate #traumahealing #parentingsupport #mentalhealthtips #mentalhealth #parentingtips...

This year, Newport has partnered with @neda (National Eating Disorder Association) as a collaborator for this year`s Eating Disorder Week—Get in the Know!
Eating disorders have the 2nd highest mortality rate of any mental health disorder. Yet, eating disorders only receive about $0.73 of federal research funding per individual diagnosed. For comparison, schizophrenia and Alzheimer`s receive $86–$88 each, per individual diagnosed.
There is no shame in having an eating disorder. Eating disorders are complex medical and mental illnesses that involve genetics, your environment, and social factors. However, healing is possible through treatment. Getting diagnosed and treated in the early stages of an eating disorder greatly improves the chance of recovery.
Knowledge is power! Share information, talk about it, learn the symptoms, and don`t wait to get help if needed. . . #EDAW #EatingDisorderAwareness #EatingDisorderAwarenessWeek #MentalHealthMatters #MentalHealthSupport #MentalHealthAdvocacy #MentalHealthTips #ParentingTeens #ParentingTeenagers #ParentingTips...
This week’s story comes from a previous client who went into our OCD treatment program in Los Angeles, CA. He was full of fears and doubts, but left as the best version of himself. Full story below 👇🏼
“When I walked into Newport, I did not expect to overcome so many fears. My OCD was horrible and my self-esteem was at its lowest. I would obsess every single day without stopping. Thanks to Newport, I was able to increase my self-esteem, decrease my OCD, and understand my family. After only two months, it feels like my whole life has evolved into something new. For anyone scared to start, it will be worth your time. You’ll meet the best people and you’ll become your best self.”
OCD is real and very debilitating, but there’s hope for healing ✨ . . . #ocdtreatment #ocdawareness #ocdsupport #ocdhelp #teenmentalhealth #parentingteens #youngadultmentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthsupport #parentingtips #obsessivecompulsivedisorder...
Social media is constantly telling us what we should look like and promoting toxic and unattainable "standards of beauty." In a 2021 study by City University of London, 94% of participants said they felt under pressure to look a certain way.
However, with Valentine`s Day around the corner, it`s a great time to remind ourselves that everyone is deserving and worthy of love regardless of their size and shape. 💕
Love doesn’t need to come from another person for us to feel accepted—just the opposite. When we feel love for ourselves, we can flourish and build resilience despite the harsh expectations around us.
The journey of self-acceptance can be a long and meandering road for anyone, but especially for someone having mental health challenges. Because of the ongoing negative impact on the body, eating disorders are the deadliest of all mental illnesses. However, long-term healing is possible, and support from parents and loved ones on this journey is essential!
Today, let this be a loving reminder that you are worthy—not because of how you look, but because of who you are and what you contribute to the world. ✨ . . #mentalhealthhope #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthsupport #parentingteens #parentingtips #parentingsupport #teenmentalhealth #mentalhealthjourney #valentinesday #valentinesdayselflove #selflove #selfacceptance...
If recognizing signs of bullying was already hard, parents can have an even harder time with cyberbullying.
With the vast majority of teens spending hours upon hours of time in the online world, teen cyberbullying has become rampant. Social media and other online forums provide ways for teens to bully peers without real-life repercussions.
It’s imperative that parents learn to recognize signs and know what to do, as victims of cyberbullying are four times as likely to engage in suicidal thoughts or attempts.
Tag your friends or share this post to help educate parents on things they can do about bullying, whether their child is the victim or the bully....
We know how hard it can be when your child is going through a tough time.
We share these testimonials as an attempt to restore hope. Hope for a better future, hope for healing and relief.✨
Enjoy the story of hope below from a past client who attended our teen treatment program near Irvine, CA. ♥️
“Sending our 13-year-old daughter to Newport was the hardest but best decision we have ever made. After many attempts in therapy to help her with extreme depression/anxiety, self-harm, emotional dysregulation, and a suicide attempt, we knew she needed something more intensive. At Newport, she was given the opportunity to focus on herself without all the outside distractions and with the help of knowledgeable therapists and extremely caring staff who she adored. My favorite part was the Attachment-Based Family Therapy. My daughter and I are so much closer now. When there are struggles now, we know how to work through them together in a healthy way. I am forever grateful for Newport and the way they were able to help my daughter start to turn things around. We have had a wonderful experience from the intake coordinator all the way through to the alumni follow-ups.” . . #mentalhealthhope #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthsupport #parentingteens #parentingtips #parentingsupport #teenmentalhealth #mentalhealthjourney...
80% of people who set New Year`s goals, for themselves or for their families, end up abandoning them. That`s because they`re usually too big and unrealistic—or they`re not based in authentic values and beliefs.
So this year, we`re proposing something different. Let`s make 2024 the year of acceptance! Let`s focus on the good that we are and do every day. Let`s celebrate what`s working in our lives and lean into that.
You don`t have to achieve a certain number of goals to be whole and to be enough. This year, let`s embrace ourselves, our loved ones, and our relationships just as they are—because making positive change starts with being okay with where we are right now.
On this Giving Tuesday, help teens and young adults in crisis get the support they need, by donating to To Write Love On Her Arms today.
TWLOHA has donated more than $2.6 million directly toward mental health treatment since its founding in 2007. The holiday season is supposed to be magical. But for many people, including teens, this is a stressful time of year that sparks or exacerbates feelings of anxiety, sadness, loneliness, and depression.
To reduce teen holiday stress, parents can acknowledge what their kids are experiencing and give them both space and support. Parents should also keep an eye out for these warning signs that their child might be suffering.
What other strategies do you have as a parent to ensure the holidays are as stress-free as possible? Share with other parents below 👇
This year`s #WorldMentalHealthDay theme is "mental health is a universal human right" - this is something Newport stands proudly behind. We believe that the first step is the most important step in anyone`s journey towards healing and recovery and we don`t take that lightly.
The average delay between the first signs of a mental health concern and when treatment actually happens is 11 years - this is usually due to several barriers to treatment, which include stigma, financial cost, and mistrust of the medical system. That`s why Newport takes the following steps to ensure our services remain accessible: 1️⃣ We provide our clinicians with the training and support they need to offer the highest-quality care. 2️⃣ We work with major insurance companies 3️⃣ We actively take steps to ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion for all at Newport.
It`s time to move from awareness to action and what better day to do that than today! Scroll to the last image for some ideas on what you could do with your teen or help them do it for themselves 👉😉
How many times have we heard something like, "Omg she`s so OCD, everything has to be color-coded " or "My brother is so OCD about his books." People sometimes refer to themselves or others as OCD when describing a need for things to be a certain way, and that word has become part of our everyday speech.
However, obsessive-compulsive disorder is actually a serious and often debilitating mental health condition, with symptoms including obsessive thoughts, intense fears, and compulsive behaviors. Fortunately, effective treatment for OCD is available and can help ease these disruptive symptoms. That’s why it’s so important for parents and teens to understand the facts about OCD.
