Outpatient Treatment Specialized for Neurodivergent Teens

Care that recognizes each teen’s unique gifts

Adolescents with neurodivergence have unique gifts—and also face challenges that increase their risk of mental health issues. Newport’s multidisciplinary, affirming treatment for neurodivergent teens offers tailored treatment for their individual needs, strengths, and ways of relating to the world.

We offer a specialized outpatient track for neurodivergent teens at our locations in Atlanta, Georgia, and Fairfax, Virginia. In addition, our clinical experts at all locations are experienced in treating teens with mental health disorders who also have ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, or other types of neurodiversity.

Within a compassionate, structured environment, teens learn tangible skills, interact with peers, and develop their interests and talents. Our outpatient programming for neurodivergent teens includes:

  • Individual therapy to build healthy coping strategies and distress tolerance, using modalities such as DBT and CBT
  • Attachment-Based Family Therapy and parent support groups to strengthen connection and understanding between parents and children
  • Psychiatric care, medication management, and recommendations for outside services as needed, such as occupational or speech therapy
  • Support to enhance skills for daily life, including emotion regulation, executive functioning, social proficiency, and self-care
  • Academic instruction in small, sensory-sensitive classrooms, plus education for parents on supporting student success
  • Creative group therapiessuch as music, art, improv, and gamingto enhance self-expression and teamwork

Clinical and Therapeutic Experts Who Understand This Group’s Specific Needs and Challenges

Our clinical experts and care staff for our programs have expertise and experience in addressing the mental health challenges that are most common among neurodivergent youth, including anxiety, depression, disordered eating, and conduct disorders.

Newport Academy’s programs are fully accredited by The Joint Commission.

The Link Between Mental Health and Neurodivergence

Neurodivergent people are navigating a world that is not designed for their unique ways of thinking, seeing and behaving. That helps explain why neurodivergent adolescents have 10 times the risk of mental health difficulties than their neurotypical peers.

How do you know when your child needs teen outpatient treatment?

If a teen is showing ongoing signs of depression, trauma, anxiety, distress, or defiance, they may need a structured support of a full-day outpatient program, known as a Partial Hospitalization Program.

If outpatient care isn’t enough, the next step is the immersive healing experience of a live-in teen residential program. Research shows that residential programs are an effective approach to treating teen depression, anxiety, substance use, and eating disorders.

Newport Academy’s Philosophy of Care

Our comprehensive approach incorporates clinical, experiential, and academic modalities, as well as ongoing family involvement. We treat the individual teen and the whole family to set the foundation for long-term, sustainable healing from mental health and co-occurring issues, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, self-harm, substance use disorder, and disordered eating.

We seek to heal the whole teen and also the whole family, repairing ruptures in the parent-child relationship so adolescents feel safe turning to their parents when they are struggling. Our programs also support parents, so the whole family can move forward as a harmonious unit.

Newport Academy addresses the underlying trauma that causes mental health concerns and behavioral issues. We take a scientific and compassionate approach to treatment, guiding teens to build resilience, practice self-regulation, and manage life stressors using healthy coping skills.
