Martial Arts
When taught with an emphasis on mindfulness in thought and action, the practice of martial arts can be a powerful therapeutic experience for both the mind and body. Martial Arts sessions at Newport Academy for instance, provide residents opportunities to work through mental challenges via a physical outlet. This also offers a new lens through which they can attempt to understand the significance of mental health and/or substance abuse struggles.
Research Shows
Multiple studies reveal the efficacy of martial arts in improving self-esteem, increasing self-confidence and self-control, reducing anxiety, depression, and aggressiveness, in addition to other other benefits.
“Martial arts combine therapeutic principles, pro-social bonding, and movement in a rich environment that promotes adaptation and progressive behavioral development.”
