The Newport Academy Approach

At Newport Academy, we understand adolescence is a challenging time. When a young person struggles with their mental health, the entire family is impacted. We are dedicated to healing the whole family with results-driven, evidence-based treatment.

Through a combination of individual therapy, group sessions, an accredited academic curriculum, and regular family therapy, we nurture the psychological, emotional, and educational needs of adolescents while giving families the communication tools needed to manage future challenges.

Our goal is to provide a safe, nurturing space where teens can build resilience, learn healthy coping skills, improve self-esteem, and create positive peer connections that last long after they leave our doors.

Who do we treat?

Newport Academy treats children and adolescents who are struggling with mental health and co-occurring disorders, including anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, trauma/PTSD, substance use issues, disordered eating, and other conditions. We also involve family in the treatment process, strengthening family communication and relationships.

What are some of the major differences between residential treatment programs and wilderness programs?

Newport Academy’s teen residential counseling programs are located in comfortable, home-like setting, with compassionate and caring staff. We work closely with families every step of the way in order to ensure a positive transformation in the entire family system. We do not enact punitive models of behavior modification.

Residential treatment centers for teens have been proven to generate long-term healing. With this in mind, lifelong sustainability is built into the foundation of our model of treatment. We don’t just treat symptoms. We also address the underlying causes and conditions to foster true healing.

How many teens are in your program at any given time?

At any given time, teens will typically be in the company of five to nine peers of the same gender identity. Given our industry-leading staff-to-client ratio, we have multiple staff members present during group activities.

What are the other teens in treatment like?

The adolescents we treat at Newport Academy are beautiful, bright young people who share similar challenges. As a result, they create lasting bonds through authentic connection within a supervised environment. Our alumni program supports them to stay connected on the journey of maintaining recovery from trauma, anxiety, depression, eating issues, and/or substance use.

What is the average length of stay at Newport Academy?

The average length of stay for our residential program is 45–60 days, depending on individual treatment and teen counseling needs, while the average length of stay for our teen intensive outpatient programs is 70 days to one year.

Who will be providing treatment?

Our multidisciplinary treatment teams consist of clinical experts who specialize in teen trauma and mental health disorders, including psychiatrists, therapists, registered dietitians, nurses, academic teachers, residential care staff, and more. Each program is personalized based on the individual’s unique needs.

Who owns and operates Newport Academy?

Newport Healthcare is the parent company of both Newport Academy and Newport Institute, our treatment program for young adults.

What is the role of the family in the treatment process?

Family members are involved at every step of the way in our mental health treatment programs. We know that sustainable healing and recovery must occur within the context of a teen’s relationships with loved ones. Therefore, helping our parents and teens rebuild their family system is an integral part of our treatment process.
