Our family-systems approach to teen mental health treatment and recovery incorporates the entire family into the healing process.
This approach treats each individual as a necessary part of a greater whole. Our model of care recognizes that the family is a holistic system, naturally interconnected and interdependent. Each family member plays an integral part in the wellness of the entire family. When one is affected, all are affected. It is from this foundation that the Newport Academy Treatment Team develops each family’s individual treatment plan.
Upon admission, families are provided with extensive information about the family therapy work they will be doing at Newport Academy. Parents attend Orientation, where they meet the entire Treatment Team, and are given a designated point person who will answer any questions they might have, update them on progress, and provide support throughout their teen’s healing process. This team member ensures that communication is clear and ongoing throughout treatment.
The family experience at Newport Academy includes the Parent Orientation, weekly family therapy, Family Day every other Saturday, and a Family Intensive Workshop. Communication and education facilitates holistic recovery, which is essential to sustained healing for the entire family. It is the integration of care that generates sustainable healing, as the entire family learns healthier, more harmonious behaviors together.
We use a variety of modalities to connect and re-establish trust within the family, including
- Multi-family therapeutic process groups
- Individual family therapy
- Individual parent therapy
- Experiential therapy
- Psychoeducational work.
What Parents Say
“The devastation that drug abuse caused our family was the worst nightmare we could have endured. I know that Newport Academy saved our son’s life and resurrected our family. Seeing our son come back to life and light is the greatest gift we could have ever received.”
In our Residential Programs, parents are encouraged to participate in weekly family therapy with their child’s Family Therapist. A Multi-Family Therapy Program is offered every other Saturday, consisting of psychoeducation, process groups, workshops, and visitation.
While the therapeutic aspects of the Newport Academy program are incredibly important, we also encourage families to learn to simply have fun together. Through engaging in experiential activities, such as hiking, meditation, a ropes course, and yoga, families learn to connect in new, healthier ways. Placing the emphasis on joy and connection, we take great pride in our ability to bring families from discord to harmony, and establish trust and communication within the family. We ensure that happiness is a by-product of treatment for the entire family.
Weekly individual family therapy is ongoing throughout treatment. For families who do not live close to our residences, video conferencing is available. Therapists also provide families with regular updates as to progress in treatment.
Through conscious communication, group processing, and experiential modalities, each Newport Academy family is provided with a healing space to grow into new behaviors. As your teen progresses through the Newport Academy program, we provide exceptional care. The high staff-to-teen ratio makes it possible for Newport Academy to treat each teen as an individual and each family as unique. Our commitment to your family’s recovery is evident every step of the way.
