Robust Clinical Model

We treat anxiety, depression, suicidal behavior, self-harm, disordered eating, and other mental health conditions through an integrated approach that includes:

  • A focus on family involvement, through family therapy and programming
  • A strengths-based learning environment
  • Multidisciplinary staff and therapist team
  • Individual and group therapy
  • Experiential therapies, including art, music, and movement

Support for the Whole Family

Our treatment for children utilizes Newport’s primary family therapy model, Attachment-Based Family Therapy, when age-appropriate. With younger clients, family therapy is informed by the Middle Childhood Attachment-Based Family Therapy model, a family systems approach.

Family therapists engage parents/caregivers in parenting and emotion-coaching skills, as well as behavioral interventions, as needed. In addition, parents participate in support groups and psychoeducational presentations, facilitated by family therapists and designed specifically for this age group.

Children in our outpatient programs build self-compassion, resilience, healthy coping skills, and more trusting relationships with parents.

Our Outpatient Treatment Team

Upon admission to our children’s outpatient program, each child and family is assigned a treatment team that develops a personalized program to ensure positive growth and sustainable healing.

Team members collaborate closely to optimize each child’s therapeutic growth track as they recover from mental health disorders. Moreover, treatment teams communicate closely with parents/guardians on their child’s progress and goals.

Our treatment teams may include:

  • Psychiatrists
  • Medical Doctors
  • Individual Therapists
  • Family Therapists
  • Medical Doctor/Pediatricians
  • Experiential Therapists

Two Levels of Outpatient Treatment

To support children and families with different mental health needs and levels of severity, Newport Academy offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

For children who are continuing to attend school during the day, an Intensive Outpatient Program with afternoon hours provides ongoing care and community throughout the week, while benefiting the entire family with regular check-ins and support groups.

With the opportunity to reduce or expand programming as needed, IOP is an ideal solution for children who need continued support to ensure long-term healing.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

This level of care, with programming all day, five days a week, is appropriate for children who need daily sturcture and support but who do not quite qualify for a residential level of care.

A PHP day program offers comprehensive clinical care through individual therapy, group therapy, experiential therapy, and a stabilizing routine five days a week, and children return home to their families at the end of each day.

Signs That a Child Might Benefit from an Outpatient Program

While weekly therapy and family therapy with a local therapist can be extremely beneficial, some children need more support for executive functioning, emotional regulation, and/or healing from traumatic experiences. Outpatient care for kids offers an expanded treatment team and a multidisciplinary approach so that children can move into adolescence with the skills and self-confidence they need to thrive.

If parents can answer yes to any of the questions below, an outpatient program may be the right fit for their child:

  • Is your child expressing anxiety related to school, including both academics and peer relationships?
  • Has your child struggled academically over the last year or more?
  • Has your child seemed withdrawn and not interested in friends or activities they once enjoyed?
  • Does your child express hopelessness or sadness regularly?
  • Is your child suffering from apathy and boredom?
  • Do you see signs that your teen might be self-harming, such as cutting or otherwise hurting themselves?
  • Is your child in weekly therapy, but it doesn’t seem to be making a difference?

If parents are observing any of these red flags, outpatient treatment can address what’s going on before it gets worse. It’s important to address these issues promptly, because they don’t tend to go away on their own.
