Adolescent & Teen Outpatient Program for Mental Health

Now more than ever, teens and families need support, community, and comprehensive care. Most of all, they need hope. Newport Academy’s teen outpatient program ends isolation, helps adolescents build a sense of meaning and purpose, and addresses issues that, when not dealt with, can increase the risk of suicide. Newport’s teen outpatient treatment offers three levels of care: Intensive Outpatient Program, Partial Hospitalization Program, and outpatient services fewer than five days a week—all of which provide evidence-based treatment proven to help clients heal from mental health and co-occurring issues, including trauma, depression, anxiety, and substance use.

Benefits of Teen Outpatient Programs at Newport Academy

Robust Clinical Model

We treat the underlying trauma and attachment wounds that manifest as anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and co-occurring issues such as problem substance use, self-harm, and disordered eating. Our programming is specialized for crucial moments of development in a young person’s life, as they navigate the multiple stressors and changes associated with adolescence. Each client receives an in-depth assessment that informs a tailored treatment plan, combining a variety of clinical and experiential modalities, as well as an academic curriculum and life skills training.

Healing the Whole Family

We recognize that family involvement is key to achieving sustainable healing, and our clinical model shifts the focus from the patient as the “problem” to the family as the solution. Strengthening authentic connections with self and others—including healing disruptions in the parent-child bond—is at the heart of our treatment approach. Teens in our outpatient programs build self-compassion, resilience, healthy coping skills, and more trusting relationships with parents and peers.

Signs That My Child Might Benefit from an Outpatient Program

While weekly teen therapy and family therapy counseling sessions with a local therapist can be extremely beneficial, some individuals need more support in order to regain lost ground in terms of mental health, executive functioning, and academics. An expanded treatment team and higher level of care offers the multifaceted approach that many teens and families need in order to turn things around and start thriving rather than just coping.

If parents can answer yes to any of the questions below, a teen outpatient program may be the right fit for their child:

  • Is your teen expressing anxiety related to school, including both academics and peer relationships?
  • Has your teen had a hard time academically over the last year or more?
  • Has your child been withdrawn and not interested in friends or activities they once enjoyed?
  • Does your teen express hopelessness or sadness regularly?
  • Does your teen seem unmotivated and unfocused?
  • Is your child suffering from apathy and boredom?
  • Do you see signs that your teen might be abusing drugs or self-harming?
  • Is your child in weekly therapy, but it doesn’t seem to be making a difference?

If parents are observing any of these red flags, teen outpatient treatment can address what’s going on before it gets worse. It’s important to address these issues promptly, because they don’t tend to go away on their own, and can indicate that a teen is vulnerable to a mental health crisis such as a suicide attempt.

“Third-party research on treatment outcomes at Newport Academy makes it clear that the most powerful evidence-based modalities, including experiential therapy, somatic approaches, and group work, cannot be adequately replicated online.”

Types of Teen Outpatient Treatment

We know that each teen is unique, and it is essential for them to receive the level of care that is right for them. That’s why Newport Academy teen Outpatient Program offers three options: a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and Outpatient Services.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

This level of care, with programming all day, five days a week, is often a solution for teens who need more than an hour of individual therapy a week, but who do not quite qualify for a residential level of care. A PHP day program offers comprehensive clinical care through individual therapy, group therapy, experiential therapy, and a stabilizing routine five days a week, and teens return home to their families and homes at the end of each day. The Newport Academy PHP also provides academic support and tutoring so teens continue to progress in their education while receiving the treatment they need.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

For teens who are continuing to attend school during the day, a teen Intensive Outpatient Program with afternoon hours provides ongoing care and community throughout the week, while benefiting the entire family with regular check-ins and support groups. With the opportunity to reduce or expand programming as needed, IOP is an ideal solution for young people who are progressing in recovery and need continued support to ensure that they stay on the right path beyond what an individual therapy session can provide.

Outpatient Services

A teen outpatient program is the lowest level of outpatient care, with the number of days and hours per day based on the client’s clinical needs as well as their personal goals and the goals of the family. An adolescent’s treatment team will work with the family to build a discharge plan following outpatient programming. At Newport Academy, our teen Outpatient Program may segue into or overlap with our Continuing Care program, which provides support for clients and families via text and live video sessions.

Newport Academy’s approach to outpatient programming sets us apart from conventional therapeutic providers. Learn about how our comprehensive approach to outpatient therapy meets teens and families where they are and provides them with the tools to change their lives.

Academic Advancement During Treatment

Academic progress and improved well-being go hand in hand, which is why we weave educational and clinical work together—resulting in improved well-being and greater engagement in the learning experience. Teens in our PHP day program spend time in the classroom each day, exploring their strengths and natural talents while growing their organizational and executive-functioning skills. Our specialized tutoring helps adolescents close their proficiency gaps, and provides credit recovery options for students who have fallen behind. We partner with schools to optimize success for our clients, and to gradually reintegrate them in a way that creates the highest potential for success.

An Integrated Team of Experts

Our team of licensed and credentialed experts includes both medical and clinical professionals, as well as experiential therapists, teachers, and tutors, who work together to address each client’s physical, mental, emotional, relational, educational, and spiritual needs. Our clinicians are trained in clinical modalities proven to create sustainable healing for teens and families including CBT, DBT, EMDR, and Attachment-Based Family Therapy. We also provide family therapy counseling designed to heal the parent-child relationship and improve family communication.
