Teen Mental Health

Today’s teens are struggling with mental health issues more than ever before. Teen anxiety, teen depression, teen trauma, and teen substance use are being confronted by families every day. Statistics from the National Institute of Mental Health show that one out of every five teenagers will experience some level of depression or be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. As a result, teen suicide is also on the rise, according to a 2018 report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Moreover, diagnoses of teen OCD, self-harm, eating disorders, and ADHD have become increasingly common; between 10 and 15 percent of American kids are taking medication for ADHD. In addition, teen overdose fatalities are up, due in large part to the national opioid epidemic. All too often, teens use illicit drugs and alcohol to cope with the pain of mental health conditions. Hence, this leads to destructive and sometimes deadly results, making rehab for teenagers a necessity.

Experts attribute these troubling teen mental health trends to a variety of factors. These include social media and video game addiction, proven to have a detrimental effect on adolescents; less free time and time in nature; relational trauma rooted in dysfunctional family systems; and “helicopter parenting” that leaves teens unable to navigate life challenges on their own. Moreover, larger societal issues, such as environmental concerns and a stressful political climate, leave many teens feeling frightened and hopeless.

When does “normal” adolescent stress cross over into a mental health condition? Knowing how to identify teen mental health concerns in adolescents is key. Studies show that the sooner adults spot symptoms in teens, and seek professional support, the better.
