Spencer MacDonald MS, MFTI, Individual and Family Therapist at Newport Academy

PRIMARY THERAPIST

Spencer MacDonald, MS, MFTI

Spencer MacDonald MS, MFTI, has been working with children, adolescents, and families for seven years. He helps them gain insight into the underlying reasons for their challenges. In addition, he guides them to become more self-compassionate and to embrace their emotional experience. Furthermore, he believes this process is instrumental in allowing them to experience a new understanding of themselves and repair old wounds. Therefore, this helps clients to forge family relationships based on trust, openness, and respect. Spencer’s therapeutic approach integrates psychodynamic, person-centered, motivational interviewing, family-systems, mindfulness, behavioral, and cognitive-behavioral techniques.

Before joining the Newport Academy Team in 2015, Spencer served as a marriage and family therapist intern at the Turning Point Center for Families in Santa Ana, California. Here, he provided individual, couples, family, and group therapy in elementary school, middle school, and clinical settings. In addition, he was also a program supervisor and behavior therapist for Footprints Behavioral Interventions, Fountain Valley, California. Consequently, Spencer helped to create behavioral interventions focused on self-direction, communication, and emotional control.

Newport Academy…in his own words

“The two statements that define Newport Academy are ‘We’ll love your kids until they learn to love themselves’ and ‘We meet them where they’re at.’ These thoughts represent the ultimate form of respect for our teens. Furthermore, they also represent our dedication to what families need. Families and teens are my favorite population to work with, because they come to therapy at a critical time in their lives. In conclusion, it is most effective when they’re still young enough that they can end destructive behaviors. This is key before they become deeply ingrained in their sense of self. Every day, I get to be a witness to a positive shift in a young person’s life.”—Spencer MacDonald
