Elaine Sands, PhD

Dr. Elaine Sands, a licensed professional counselor with a doctorate in Christian counseling psychology, has more than 25 years of experience as a psychotherapist. Dr. Sands also holds specialty certifications in psychological testing and is nationally certified to work with trauma, crisis, and loss. She holds advanced degrees in education and counseling, as well as an ABD (“all but dissertation”) in clinical psychology. Before coming to Newport Academy, Dr. Sands was one of two founding partners of Belsay Counseling Center in Michigan, which opened its doors in 1992.

Dr. Sands has led seminars on trauma, mood disorders, sexual abuse, infidelity, sexual addictions, trauma, spiritual struggles, and parenting issues. She has been a guest on radio and cable television, and has appeared as a speaker at national conferences and as an expert witness in family court. She has also supervised other therapists, both counselors and pastors, in their respective disciplines—both for guidance and to help them fulfill their licensure requirements.

Prior to her work as a psychotherapist, Dr. Sands was certified as a secondary school teacher, and has a special place in her heart for adolescents and their parents.

Dr. Sands has been married for more than 40 years and has two adult children.
